  • 100 g soup vegetables (or this amount in total of carrots, leek, celery, parsley)

  • a little rapeseed oil
  • 25 g vegan bacon cubes (optional)
  • 87.5 g dried green split peas
  • 0.25 bay leaf
  • 0.35 L water

  • 0.125 tsp smoked paprika powder (if you skip the bacon cubes)

Instructions

Peel and dice the vegetables. Onions, leek, and celery should be finely chopped, the rest can be cut more rustic into about 1 cm cubes. Place everything in a large bowl and set aside.

2 Sweat the onions in a little oil and optionally add the vegan bacon to sauté briefly.
3 Add the peas and the bay leaf.

Pour in the water and let your soup simmer for 70 minutes over medium heat with the lid on. You may need to add a little more water. Stir occasionally!

Add the remaining vegetables, salt generously (important: only now!) and cook your soup for another 15 minutes (or until the vegetables are cooked). Don’t forget to stir!

6 Shortly before the end, optionally add vegan sausages to heat them through. You can leave them whole or slice them.
7 Season with pepper and smoked paprika powder. A splash of vinegar rounds it off and many also like to add some mustard.
8 Tip: Remove the bay leaf so nobody finds it on their spoon.

Roughly chop the parsley.

Divide the soup into bowls and garnish with parsley. Now you can enjoy your vegan pea soup!

Pea soup means something different to everyone. Some make theirs without potatoes, others add so many that it’s almost more of a potato soup. Some like sausages in it, others love their vegan pea soup with smoked tofu or completely without meat alternatives. Whether thick and hearty or lighter and more liquid, you can easily adapt this recipe to how you like your pea soup best.

Grandma’s pea soup – but vegan

Do you remember that warm, cozy feeling when you smelled grandma’s pea stew cooking? Many of us have delicious memories of grandma’s kitchen, but can no longer eat the often meat- and butter-heavy dishes because we now live vegetarian or vegan. Wanting to relive that childhood feeling, we veganized grandma’s traditional pea soup recipe and now share it with you, so you too can enjoy pea soup just like grandma’s – only vegan.

This pea stew recipe is therefore vegan, meaning no meat. BUT it doesn’t have to be without bacon – there are tasty vegan alternatives now. But again: nothing is a must. If you don’t like vegan substitutes, simply skip them and instead add smoky flavor with smoked paprika or smoked tofu. Same with the sausages: you can add vegan sausages – but the stew tastes great even without them!

Vegan pea soup recipe | Tips

  • Which peas? The best are green, dried split peas. They don’t need soaking and cook quickly. If you only find whole dried peas, soak them overnight before cooking.
  • This vegan pea soup is great for meal prep. Make it once and you’ve got lunch ready for the next day. It even tastes better the next day after the flavors have developed.
  • You can decide how thick or thin you want your soup – just add more or less liquid. Same goes for the tenderness of the vegetables.
  • Don’t like chunky soups or do your kids complain about veggie pieces? Just blend the soup! Remove sausages or bacon first and add them back after blending.
  • Important: Salt the pea soup only towards the end, when adding the rest of the vegetables. Otherwise, the peas may not soften properly.
