The fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K. What's special about these four vitamins is that, unlike many other vitamins, they are not water-soluble but, as the name suggests, fat-soluble. This means they dissolve upon contact with fat, allowing the body to absorb them. Therefore, it's very important to always consume fat-soluble vitamins with a meal containing fat. A normal breakfast, lunch, or dinner is usually sufficient. A healthy snack can also be a good source of these vitamins.
A particularly practical feature is that these types of vitamins can be stored in the body, allowing it to draw on these reserves when needed. However, this also increases the potential risk of overdose: While an excessive dose of water-soluble vitamins (over a short period!) is often simply excreted, excess fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate in the body, potentially leading to an overdose in the long term.
What fat-soluble vitamins are there?
The next group of our vitamins and minerals are the water-soluble vitamins. These include all the B vitamins and vitamin C. They dissolve easily in water and therefore, unlike fat-soluble vitamins, don't necessarily need to be taken with a fatty meal. Instead, a glass of water or other liquid is sufficient. Water-soluble vitamins cannot be stored in the body. Any excess is simply excreted (up to a certain point). This means that we must pay particular attention to consuming them regularly (i.e., daily!) through our diet. Our bodies don't actually have any reserves of these vitamins to draw upon.
