A social start-up in search of the most sustainable packaging

Grass cardboard and compostable can: How we came up with our packaging and what makes it so special, you can find out here.

A social start-up in search of the most sustainable packaging

Anyone who knows us knows how important sustainability is to us.
Right from the beginning, it was clear that, unlike other companies, we wanted our packaging to be especially sustainable and, above all, plastic- & aluminum-free.

But that turned out to be much more difficult than we initially thought. How we ended up with our can, the stylish grass cardboard, and our paper tape—and what makes them so special—you’ll find out here.

Our Can

Anyone who has ever bought protein powder/supplements knows how much waste can be generated. Most manufacturers package their products in plastic cans, aluminum bags & supposedly “sustainable” cardboard cans that are actually coated with aluminum on the inside.

Even if many manufacturers boast that their packaging is recyclable, only a small portion is actually recycled. The rest ends up in landfills in Indonesia or is burned as residual waste.

Ocean pollution caused by plastic packaging

So we set out to develop a can that contains neither plastic nor aluminum and is still suitable for food. The search began…

We contacted over 20 different packaging manufacturers. In the end, funnily enough, only one remained who could meet our criteria.

By the way, this can costs about 10 times more than a standard plastic cylinder or one with an aluminum coating.
Normally, this would be a huge competitive disadvantage. But staying true to our values is far more important to us!

The Vetain can is now made entirely of paper. The cool thing is that it puts much less strain on the environment. So once you’ve finished your protein, you can simply dispose of the can with your paper recycling.

Shipping

We are particularly proud of our shipping boxes. Our boxes are made from 75% recycled paper and 25% grass paper. Their production requires 99% less water, 90% less energy, and not a single gram of chemical solvents!

Bare Numbers

Pulp: 5,000 kW/h, 6,000 l of water and 2.3 tons of wood for one ton of pulp

Grass fiber: 112 kW/h, 6 l of water and only 1.2 t of grass for one ton of fiber

We have 2 different sizes of boxes, which we’ve tailored exactly to our products. This way we can save as many resources as possible while ensuring your proteins arrive safely.
To top it off, we also use paper tape with natural rubber adhesive to seal the packages securely. Plus, we ship our parcels with DHL GoGreen!

Our Conclusion

Sustainability comes at a price, but it’s 100% worth it. It would be selfish to live only in the here and now without thinking of the generations to come. Earth is humanity’s only home, and that’s how we should treat it.
