The new year is just around the corner, and with it begins the search for... New Year's resolutions. Because we can't start 2026 without good intentions for the new year, can we? Eating healthier, reading more, or exercising regularly – what's on your list this year?
If you still need inspiration or want to find out how to actually keep your resolutions this time really If you're looking to persevere, you've come to the right place. Grab a warm cup of tea, make yourself comfortable, and learn everything you need to know to start the new year off right!

Why New Year's resolutions often fail

We all know that gym membership that's signed up for in January with great enthusiasm and then never used again, right? Why is that?
Many New Year's resolutions fail not because we lack discipline, but because of how we approach them. We often start on January 1st. over-motivated, want Change everything at once and set ourselves huge goals, which after just a few days are totally overwhelming have an effect. Furthermore, we often formulate resolutions as... spongy – “Live healthier,” “do more exercise,” “less stress.” But what exactly does that mean in everyday life? Without concrete steps, a good intention quickly becomes a nice wish that simply gets lost in the hustle and bustle of daily life. We quickly slip back into old routines, simply because they are familiar and comfortable. And it takes time for intentions to become routines.

But that doesn't mean that New Year's resolutions can't work – they just need more structure, realistic expectations, and a little patience with ourselves.

. ...and how you can still manage to keep your New Year's resolutions

We have some tips for you on how to keep your New Year's resolutions – step by step.

  1. Reflect on your year
What went well, what did you miss, or what would you have liked? In which areas are you already satisfied with yourself and your life, and where would you like to make changes in 2026? Write down all your thoughts.

  2. Setting goals
New Year's resolutions often fail because they are set more or less arbitrarily, simply choosing what sounds good. However, you can only achieve and maintain your New Year's resolutions if they align with your goals and help you realize your desires. & Realizing dreams. Then you know exactly what you're working towards. So set yourself a few goals for the new year. It could be something small or a bigger project, like... z.B. live a healthier life.

  3. Prioritize the goals and break them down into smaller goals.
If you just wrote down five or more goals, now's a good time to look at which ones are truly important to you. Taking on too much and trying to completely overhaul your life (including yourself) overnight is doomed to failure. Instead, choose a few, but important goals that you're happy to work towards. If your goals are big, break them down into smaller ones; otherwise, you'll quickly become overwhelmed and give up because you won't know where to start. Living a healthier life is possible... z.B. divide it into eating healthier, more exercise, getting enough sleep, etc.

  4. Define your goals clearly and decide how you want to achieve them.
Write down your goals and decide what they mean to you. What exactly does that mean to you, and how can you implement it? Write yourself a to-do list, or, to put it more motivatingly, a list of inspirations. So... z.B. Go to the gym twice a week instead of doing more exercise. That way, if you're feeling a bit lost, you can always see exactly what you could still do today to achieve your goals.

  5. Grow gradually
It's really important not to take on too much. Reading for an hour a day, cooking three healthy meals a day, and going to the gym for an hour every day is often simply too much. Start gradually and try things out. z.B. Going to the gym twice a week and cooking one really healthy meal a day is a good start. Over time, you can easily increase your activity and adjust your goals.

  6. Now it's time for implementation.
Just get started! Don't overthink it and switch off your mind, which is constantly coming up with a thousand excuses. Of course, you can (and should!) take a break and not torture yourself every day just to reach your goals. But if you notice that the days you're making excuses are becoming more and more frequent, it might be time to take action. ;) Keep reminding yourself why you're doing it. Soon, the new habits will become routine, and it will get easier.

  7. Dealing with setbacks and lack of motivation
It's perfectly normal to experience a dip in motivation after a few days or weeks. Don't hesitate to ask for help from friends and family who can support you. Celebrate your successes, both big and small, and reward yourself when you pull yourself together to work on your resolutions. But at the same time, accept that sometimes you just can't stick to your goals.

  8. Stay tuned and keep the big picture in mind.
Giving 50% every day is better than giving 110% for two weeks and then accomplishing nothing for the rest of the year. Slow, sustainable development is (almost) always better than rushing into things you can't sustain.
To put it in perspective: Going to the gym twice a week gives you more than 100 workouts a year; one apple a week becomes more than 50 apples a year; and 15 minutes of reading a day leads to 10 books a year.

Our tip: Habit Tracker

What helps me most to really stick to my resolutions and build sustainable routines are... Habit Tracker. Habit trackers can help you with that support, To introduce new – good – habits into your everyday life or to finally break unwanted habits.
Such trackers come in many different forms: old school on paper, as habit tracker apps, or as digital ones. Habit Tracker like the one from Vetain. Regardless of their appearance, all trackers are structured similarly: they usually feature a table or calendar where you can enter new habits, meaning goals or objectives. You can then check off a box or color in a box each day when you've completed the task. Tracking habits in this way makes it easier for many people to maintain them long-term and establish consistent routines. Vetain's habit tracker also automatically calculates your progress and provides an overview of how your month is going so far – showing how well you're performing each of your habits. This automatically gives you a boost of motivation and helps you stick with it.

I love habit trackers and can't imagine my New Year's resolutions for 2026 without a tracker!

Are New Year's resolutions nonsense?

New Year, New Me – useful or not? More and more often you hear that resolutions are nonsense. Often this is followed by the question: How long do New Year's resolutions actually last? Admittedly, they often only last a few days or weeks. But that doesn't mean the tradition itself is nonsense. It simply shows that the way someone tries to implement their resolutions isn't perfect yet. Because if you don't approach it the right way, you simply can't stick with it. But we believe that engaging with yourself, reflecting, and improving yourself and your life is really powerful and incredibly important.

This doesn't necessarily have to happen on New Year's Day, of course. For many, however, the clear end of one year and the fresh start of another is a welcome invitation for a new beginning. And I, too, believe that a new year brings an incredible amount of potential and motivation. But you can certainly start making and implementing good resolutions in November or on a Tuesday afternoon. Because good habits are always beneficial, whether at the beginning of the year or when summer is just around the corner.
