But what does “buffered” Vitamin C actually mean?
Here’s a quick explanation: Vitamin C has a low pH value and is acidic. If you’ve ever eaten a lot of lemon or sour candy, you may know the stomach discomfort that follows, as the acid can irritate your stomach. The same can happen with unbuffered Vitamin C supplements – and we definitely don’t want that! That’s why we buffer our Vitamin C to make it gentler on the stomach.
This is done by adjusting the pH of the supplement, adding another substance with a higher pH value to balance out the acidity. This substance is a base, such as calcium. Calcium and Vitamin C are simply combined.
